Minot Approves Plan For Using Federal Flood Grants

The Minot City Council has approved a plan for spending federal disaster recovery grant money, after shifting more money to programs that help homeowners rebuild.

 

 

 

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) - The Minot City Council has approved a plan for spending federal disaster recovery grant money, after shifting more money to programs that help homeowners rebuild.

The city is getting $68 million through Housing and Urban Development to help with recovery from last summer's historic Souris River flooding. The city's plan for spending the money includes helping homeowners with repairs as well as other measures such as developing affordable housing and repairing infrastructure.

Some residents said more of the money should go to help flooded homeowners, and less should go for administration and infrastructure. City officials redirected half of $4.5 million intended for storm sewer improvements to programs to help homeowners with repairs or reconstructions.

HUD must approve the plan.

The 2011 flood swamped more than 4,000 homes and businesses.
