Feds File Lawsuit To Recover Costs From N.D. Manhunt

Federal authorities are taking a prisoner transport company to court to help recover costs incurred from a rural North Dakota manhunt that used citizens to act as special deputies.

 

 

 

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Federal authorities are taking a prisoner transport company to court to help recover costs incurred from a rural North Dakota manhunt that used citizens to act as special deputies.

The suit against Extradition Transport of America asks a judge to order restitution for several agencies and the farmers who formed a posse to help flush Joseph Megna from a cornfield with combines.

Megna was being transported from Florida to Washington state in October 2011 when he escaped at a rest stop.

The lawsuit calls for Dennis Smith, the property owner, to receive more than $25,000. Smith wound up harvesting corn before it was ready.

Some agencies have already been reimbursed.

Extradition Transport of America spokesman Billy Taylor says the company's insurance provider is working to make sure everyone is paid.
