SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says his office will re-examine a list of nearly 40 deaths that Oglala Sioux tribal officials say were insufficiently prosecuted or investigated.
Oglala Sioux tribal officials sent Johnson on Thursday a list naming 39 people who died on or near the reservation from the 1970s to 1999.
The tribe previously had requested that dozens of murder cases, especially from the 1970s, be reopened but hadn't identified specific victims.
Now that the federal officials have the list, Johnson says his office will go back through it and see if there are any cases that can be prosecuted.
Johnson says the challenge is finding new evidence for cases that happened several decades ago.
