The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be on the lookout this weekend for drunken boaters as part of an effort called Operation Dry Water.
DNR Captain Greg Salo said alcohol is a big distraction for boaters.
"Alcohol is the biggest contributor to boating fatalities and accidents," said Salo. "Just like driving a car, it's a distraction is what it comes down to."
Salo said officials would rather arrest someone for boating under the influence than have to tell a family that the person is never coming home again.
Alcohol was a factor in half of the boating fatalities in Minnesota in 2011.
