Twins Seek Dorms, Naming Rights In Fort Myers

The Minnesota Twins are seeking player dormitories and the rights to rename Hammond Stadium as part of lease negotiations for its spring training site.

 

 

 

 

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - The Minnesota Twins are seeking player dormitories and the rights to rename Hammond Stadium as part of lease negotiations for its spring training site.

The dormitories would be part of an estimated $7.2 million price tag for a "player development academy."

The Twins currently put their Gulf Coast League players up at a local hotel from mid-March through late August. Lee County Sports Authority Director Jeff Mielke says county commissioners don't support the idea.

But Mielke said the county will probably have to let the team rename the stadium and keep the profits. Lee County let the Boston Red Sox sell naming rights to their spring training stadium for an undisclosed amount.

The details are part of negotiations to finalize a lease to keep the Twins in Fort Myers for another 30 years. A Twins spokesman didn't immediately comment.
