North Dakota Farm Family Wants Charges Dismissed

A judge says he'll rule within a month on whether to dismiss charges against a Nelson County farm family involved in a prolonged standoff with authorities last year.

 

 

 

 

LAKOTA, N.D. (AP) - A judge says he'll rule within a month on whether to dismiss charges against a Nelson County farm family involved in a prolonged standoff with authorities last year.

Lakota-area farmer Rodney Brossart appeared in court Monday with his wife, Susan, and four of their children for a pretrial hearing on charges relating to the summer-long standoff with authorities searching for missing cattle.

Authorities allege family members at one point leveled guns at officers, and that family members ignored repeated orders to appear in court on felony charges including terrorizing and resisting arrest.

Defense attorneys have raised questions about authorities' use of an unarmed drone to do surveillance on the Brossarts.

Defense attorney Bruce Quick says charges should be dropped because of "outrageous government conduct."
