North Dakota State baseball players Zach Wentz and Tim Colwell were named to the Capital One Academic All-America® first team by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State baseball players Zach Wentz and Tim Colwell were named to the Capital One Academic All-America® first team by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Wentz, a senior third baseman from Bismarck, N.D., had a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average in health and physical education and Colwell, a sophomore center fielder from Shoreview, Minn., had a 4.0 in university studies.
This is the second Academic All-America® award for Wentz and the third and fourth for NDSU baseball since moving to Division I. Catcher Kole Zimmerman was third team in 2008 and Wentz was second team in 2010.
Colwell leads The Summit League with a .381 batting average, 62 runs, and a school-record 93 hits, nine triples and 244 at-bats. He ranks 37th nationally in hitting, 16th in runs scored, eighth in hits and first in triples. He was NDSU's leadoff hitter in all 60 games, had a team-high 12 stolen bases in 16 tries, and was named to the All-Summit League first team last month.
Wentz ranks 10th in the league in hitting with a .317 average and is fifth with 227 at-bats, sixth with 72 hits, and eighth with 41 RBIs. He set NDSU career records for games played (208), at-bats (805), hits (269) and doubles (58), and finished second in total bases (389) and walks (76), fourth in runs scored (139) and time hit-by-pitch (32), fifth in RBIs (133) and 10th in home runs (20). He was named to the All-Summit League second team.
To be eligible for Capital One Academic All-America® honors, student-athletes must have a 3.30 or better cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale, sophomore athletic standing, and be a starter or key reserve for their team.
North Dakota State set a school record for victories finishing 40-20 overall. The Bison placed third in The Summit League with a 14-10 record before advancing to the league championship game.
