MOORHEAD, MN - Brenda Elmer beat Lauri Winterfeldt to secure a spot on the Moorhead City Council.
Elmer says the budget and permanent flood protection are top priorities right now. She says she spent a lot of time talking to people about their flood experiences, she thinks her willingness to listen helped her gain the support of voters.
In another upset, Mark Altenburg beat three-term council member John Rowell. Altenburg is an MSUM professor.
Students make up about 30-percent of the voters in Ward 2 and an active group of MSUM students made a push to show their votes matter after rowell made a remark that students don't usually vote.
Newcomer Luther Stueland also won a seat on the council, Dan Bohner decided not to run again.
