LAKE OF THE WOODS
Anglers have started catching better numbers of walleyes off the reefs, but they’re finding bigger fish on the south end of the lake. Most houses are in 26 to 31 feet of water; some walleyes are suspended so electronics help, and jigging in one hole and using a dead stick in another seems to be working best. You’ll also find a mixture of sauger sizes, a lot of tullibees and northern pike on the south end. At the Northwest Angle, fishing has been best in 30 to 40 feet of water, with a mixture of walleyes and saugers in most buckets. Crappie reports indicate slower fishing, with some fish being found over 30 feet or deeper.
DEVILS LAKE
Anglers still have to work to scratch out some fish, but fishing should become more consistent as the weather straightens out, reports Devils Lake fishing guide Mark Bry. Marking fish isn’t a problem, Bry said, but getting them to bite has been another story, at times. Unlike most winters, when walleye fishing is best in the mornings and again before dark, the fish this winter occasionally bite best in the middle of the day and less toward evening, Bry said. Anglers are marking lots of perch on their electronics and getting a few of them to bite, Bry said, a trend that should become even more pronounced as the weather improves.
BEMIDJI AREA
Crappies have started hitting on the southwest side of Dark Lake suspended over 40 feet of water. On Lake Bemidji, the Cameron Park area and DNR Bar are producing walleyes in 18 to 35 feet of water and perch in 12 to 20 feet. Lake Plantagenet is giving up walleyes in 18 to 22 feet, while Campbell Lake is producing northern pike and crappies in 15 feet. Look to Grant Lake for bluegills in 13 to 18 feet.
DETROIT LAKES
Walleye action is limited to low-light periods on lakes Sallie, Melissa, Pelican, Deadshot Bay, Big Cormorant and Upper Cormorant in 20 to 25 feet. Look for crappies in 17 to 20 feet and sunfish in the 12- to 15-foot weeds on Little Detroit Lake, Severson Lake, Little Pelican Lake and Upper Cormorant.
PARK RAPIDS AREA
Walleye action has been hit-and-miss, at best, with lakes such as Potato, Long and Fish Hook giving up a few fish during low-light periods in 25 to 32 feet of water. Sucker minnows continue to produce northern pike in 14 feet on Big Mantrap, where anglers also are finding crappies suspended above 30 to 35 feet. Look for bluegills in 12 feet on Fish Hook and the Crow Wing Chain.
