Movie Review: Men in Black III
Daniel "Pinto" Gunderson, the producer of the "Mike McFeely Show," gives his review on the movie Men in Black III.
The first of the three Men in Black movies hit theaters back in 1997. Fifteen years later, and ten years after Men in Black II, the people behind this franchise decided it would be good idea to make a third installment. This being the fourth of the summer movies I had decided to review, I figured it would be a nice change of pace to go see something with familiar characters and a familiar storyline.
The story begins with an alien, Boris the Animal (Jermaine Clement) escaping from LunarMax, a prison built on the moon to handle the most offending alien criminals. He comes back to Earth to go back in time to kill Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones & Josh Brolin), who put him in the LunarMax 40 years ago.
Meanwhile, Agent J (Will Smith) starts to question the relationship between him and Agent K (Jones). Back in 1969, Boris ends up taking care of K. This is realized by Agent J when he shows up for work looking for K and no one knows who he is talking about.
To save Agent K’s life, Agent J must go back in time himself, hook up with the younger version of Agent K (Brolin) and stop Boris from completing his task of taking K’s life.
Fun Fact: The first Men in Black grossed nearly $590 million at the box office.
What I Liked:
The ending of this movie was something I didn’t expect and was pleasantly surprised by. Spoiler alert, the good guys win. That’s obviously not a hard conclusion to come to. The twist that happens is something I won’t ruin.
What it reveals explains a lot about the relationship between Agent K and Agent J. Why Agent K acts the way he does and shows how Agent J grew up. Nice ending, however…
What I Didn’t Like:
It couldn’t save what, in my mind, was a boring story. Go back in time and save Agent K. Sounds simple and it should be considering a movie like this isn’t one built on a complicated plot.
Unfortunately, like so many sequels, they beat up an already well used story. The “going back in time” bit to save the world from species unknown to them didn’t do it for me.
Even a good ending and an extra intense bad guy couldn’t make me feel otherwise. I like the first time around with this story and characters, the second time I stomached it but the third time it just got too boring for me.
F = Forget It
It is worth saying that sequels hardly work. The likes of Toy Story 2 and The Godfather: Part II are few and far between and a movie like Men in Black III relies too much on a story, characters and an idea that is just too old.
I’m wondering if the geniuses behind this were sitting around a room, maybe a bar even, had a couple one too many and one of them uttered, “You know what's a good idea, making a Men in Black III.” Enough people thought this was a good idea and gave it the green light.
This movie will make money on the name sake alone, but if I were you, I would just let it be. You are not missing out if you decide to skip this movie and go to The Avengers again.
