Hi Doug:
Just heard from the manager of Rice Lake Wildlife Refuge about this year's deer hunt. It is on, but they've had some flooding issues earlier this year, so the deer are just coming back out there where I and my blind friend hunt for the DNR. The good news is that there has been an increase in the number of mature bucks in our hunting zone. So from October 6/9, I'll be in the field once again. Just have to snag a license, get reregistered with Washington for the federal land hunt, and change out the regular rifle scope for a pistol one to provide my scope man a better range of sight looking over my shoulder. Learned to do that from the bear hunt. Got the big Smokey, but just bearly. Last year I tried not blowing so much on the deer calls and saw nothing, until the end after I had packed up, so this year I'm going to sound like a herd of does. I feel this is the year. Had chances at some monsters, but haven't dropped one yet in four years. But it isn't for the kill that I keep going. It is for the friendship of the hunters and I. It makes empty tags not such a big deal. It is the calls of, "Hi Carey", upon exiting the vehicle. I am an all-year hunter. If I'm not out in the field, I'm planning and researching future adventures. Hard to believe that I was a militant anti-hunter, but I guess we all grow. I think it is the more active role a hunters plays in real environmentalism that keeps me in the sport. Might have to help my friend along through a bit. He is in not so good of health, as am I, so you never know when the last hunt really is, so make it count.
