The 8pm hour Night Time live interviewed music act, Bump.  Bump is a progressive rock group from Detroit, MI. While their songs are widely varied in style, the recurring theme is an atmospheric, spaced-out sound that is deep in mood and advanced structurally.  Bump performed two live songs in addition to interview.

God, Please Let Me Live Paycheck to Paycheck

Friday, July 31st, 2009

That’s a tough prayer to say, isn’t it?  Or how about we say a prayer like, “God – please let the economy continue to struggle.”  Man, that’s messed up…but it’s biblical…

In the book of Proverbs (chapter 30, verses 7-9) it says:
“Two things I ask of you, o Lord, do not refuse me before I die.  Keep falsehood and lies away from me;” (which is a pretty good prayer to lift up)
But then it goes on to say:
“GIVE ME NEITHER POVERTY NOR RICHES, BUT GIVE ME ONLY MY DAILY BREAD.  Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘who is the Lord?’  Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.”

So on one hand the author is saying, “Keep lies away from me.”  That’s plenty safe, isn’t it?  But wow, does it take a crazy turn.  He then prays to not be in poverty…but not to be rich?  And then he asks for just ‘his daily bread?’

So we’re seriously supposed to pray that God not give us abundance…but rather just give us enough to survive?  According to the writings in Proverbs that is exactly how we’re supposed to pray.

So that honest prayer would break down like this:  “God, please don’t give me a savings account.  Don’t give me a retirement fund.  Don’t give me a fridge full of food.  Don’t give me a closet full of clothes.  Don’t give me a large paycheck.  Just give me enough to survive so that I can fully rely on you.  Otherwise, I might forget you.  I want to stay completely dependent on you.”

If we have everything we need, then why in the world would we have to depend on God?  Maybe, as times can feel toughest, is when we’ll really start to understand how much we need God.  It’s a crazy thing to pray for – and it’s downright scary.

I DARE YOU to pray this prayer.

Just the Facts: And the Facts Demand U.S. Health Care Reform

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Welcome to my maiden KFGO column.  Joel asked me to write this column because he thinks that I will write something really controversial and then all you will run to the internet to comment.  Your comments will talk about how darn stupid and confused I am. That will make Joel laugh and feel superior.  And it will give him more ammunition to give me a hard time when I am on “News and Views” with him, especially when you call in and tell him that I am right and he is wrong.  (He really hates that.)

So I thought that I would start a little easy; save my opinions for later; and, as Joe Friday once said, give you, the KFGO listeners, “Just the Facts” on health care in United States.

Health care spending in the United States is out of control and the future does not look better.
In 1970, total U.S. health care spending was about $75 billion, or only $356 per person. In 2007 health care costs have grown to $2.2 trillion, or $7,421 per person. The Congressional Budget Office projects that, without any reform, total spending on health care will rise from 16.5 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2007 to 25 percent in 2025 and to 49 percent in 2082. North Dakota is not exempt from this trend. The growth in health care spending in North Dakota from 1991 to 2004 was 6.3% annually compared to national annual average of 5.5% during that same period.

While health care costs have gone up, so has the quality and amount of health care.
For example, the Washington Post reported the following facts in its Sunday paper:

“In the 1960s, the chance of dying in the days immediately after a heart attack was 30 to 40 percent. In 1975, it was 27 percent. In 1984, it was 19 percent. In 1994, it was about 10 percent. Today, it’s about 6 percent. …Over the same period, the charges for treating a heart attack marched steadily upward, from about $5,700 in 1977 to $54,400 in 2007 (without adjusting for inflation).”

This is just one example.  My stage 3 breast cancer survival makes me another improved health care statistics.

Even though we are number one in health care spending, the United States health care system is bested by 36 countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks the United States health system 37th among the major countries.  Further the United States’ WHO rank for “healthy live expediency” is 24th.  “Healthy live expediency” is defined as the average number of years that a person can expect to live in “full health” by taking into account years lived in less than full health due to disease and/or injury.  Infant mortality, life expectancy and survival-rates for heart attacks are all worse in the United State than the OECD average.  OECD represents the 30 most developed countries in the world.

Currently over 45 million US citizens (15%) do not have health insurance of any kind and public insurance is already provided to over 26% of Americans.
The nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, a leader in health care research, reports the following:

Health Insurance Coverage of the Total Population, states (2006-2007), U.S. (2007)
US # US %
Employer 159,311,384 53.4%
Individual 14,541,782 4.9%
Medicaid 39,296,423 13.2%
Medicare 36,155,452 12.1%
Other Public 3,253,122 1.1%
Uninsured 45,657,193 15.3%
Total 298,215,356 100.0%

While over 53% of people in the U.S. receive health insurance as an employment benefit, employees’ wages have stagnated in part because of the rising cost of health care insurance.
Premiums for employment-based private insurance increased 114 percent from 1999 to 2007; during that same period wages increased 27 percent.  Because employers do not have unlimited resources for labor costs, wage increases employees might have received have been diverted, in part, to health insurance payments.

Rising health care costs hurt the United States businesses and their ability to be internationally competitive.
Health insurance drives total labor costs higher and reduces profitability for industries facing international competition. As a consequence, U.S. businesses have become increasingly uncompetitive.

Even if a citizen has health insurance, that is no guarantee a family will not be economically devastated by a health crisis.
In a study recently published in the American Journal of Medicine, a team at Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School and Ohio University reported the following:
• 62.1% of all bankruptcies have a medical cause.
• Most medical debtors were well educated and middle class; three quarters had health insurance.
• The share of bankruptcies attributable to medical problems rose by 50% between 2001 and 2007.

Medical malpractice costs are not the reason for dramatically increased health care costs.
The Americans for Insurance Reform’s recent study reports that medical malpractice premiums are less than one-half of one percent of overall health care costs, and medical malpractice claims are a mere one-fifth of one percent of health care costs. It concludes that if Congress completely eliminated every single medical malpractice lawsuit overall health care costs would not substantially change.

Having made the case for reform, the big question is what should health care reform look like? Next week I will list my ideas for health care reform…then you (and Joel) can really have at it. And as you prepare to comment on this, remember the wise words, of the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.”

*BTW:  I know that the phrase “Just the facts, ma’am” was never actually spoken by Joe Friday.  The actual quote was, “All we want are the facts, ma’am”…so you do not know need to comment on how I did not even get that right.

Yes, I have been arrested.

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I was 11 years old. I had been shoplifting for a few months and made the decision to go and steal from Hornbacher’s (the local grocery store)…totally unchartered territory for us. So my friend and I walked there after school – and we decided that we were going to steal some candy and a snack. Sure enough, the candy I had stolen was Bubble Jug (powdered bubble gum that solidifies in your mouth – and this is a disgusting choice, I know). The snack I decided to steal was from the produce department. That’s right – I decided to steal Turkey Jerky. And yes, you can laugh…

Long story short – we got busted. We were dragged upstairs to the manager’s office. We watched as he searched for what seemed to be hours through the phone book until he found the phone number for the police department.

So then the cop came – he handcuffed us and walked us out of the store that I had shopped at with my family my whole life. Shame poured over me. We were put in the back of the cop car – and driven down to the station. Once we got there, the police officer asked me for my mom’s work number. OH CRUD!

Ten minutes later, in walks my mom. I had never believed that someone could actually blow steam from their ears like in the old cartoons until this moment. As the steam blew, I’m pretty sure that her head also did a 360 degree turn while her neck and body stayed motionless. Her anger had me cowering in fear and crying like a baby.

It took the anger of my mom for me to realize the mistakes I was making. I didn’t realize the severity of my actions until I saw the damage I had done. And by this point – it was too late. And it was a slippery slope I was on. I would steal almost every day just for the ‘high.’ I had no clue that my ‘high’ would cause so much pain and anguish for those that I love.

Sin is a fickle beast. It can consume you and destroy relationships that you have. I know that I deeply hurt my mom and I caused her shame she never deserved.

And at the end of that day, I knew that my mom had nothing but love in her heart. And at the end of the day, I know that God is the same way. He may be angry, hurt, and disappointed by the sin that we let consume our life – and that he wants us desperately to make better choices – but he still loves us. That’s called grace, my friends.

So are your choices bringing joy to God – or are they bringing disappointment? It’s not a tricky question. Is the way that you are living your life cause for celebration or anger?

The great thing is that no matter what your answer is…God loves you just the same. Again, that’s called grace. But I hope that you can have the kind of transformation I had in my life back in good ol’ 1991… I hope that you have that burning desire to cease from sin because you see the damage it can do. It tore me up and rocked my everything to see my mom weep from something I had done. Maybe our choices cause our Father to do the same…

Sometimes we lose touch with how bad our mistakes hurt God because we don’t physically see him. Either way I have to believe that I want to be better for him because he loves me regardless of the mistakes I make. I hope you want to be more for him, too.

Catherine Austin Fitts: Purpose of Flu Vaccine is Depopulation

Thursday, July 30th, 2009
Here is an article from Catherine Austin Fitts, a regular guest on Night Time Live with Jason Spiess
Catherine Austin Fitts

I believe one of the goals of the swine flu vaccine is depopulation. Perhaps it is the goal of a swine flu epidemic as well, whether bio-warfare or hype around a flu season.

These days, I keep remembering my sense of urgency leaving the Bush Administration in 1991. We had to do something to turn around the economy and gather real assets behind retirement plans and the social safety net. If not, Americans could find themselves deeply out on a limb. I felt my family and friends were in danger. They did not share my concern. They had a deep faith in the system.

As my efforts to find ways of reengineering government investment in communities failed to win political support, Washington and Wall Street moved forward with a debt bubble and globalization that was horrifying in its implications for humanity.

Overwhelmed by what was happening, I estimated the end result. My simple calculations guessed that we were going to achieve economic sustainability on Earth by depopulating down to a population of approximately 500 million people from our then current global population of 6 billion.  I was a portfolio strategist used to looking at numbers from a very high level. Those around me could not fathom how all the different threads I was integrating could lead to such a conclusion.  To me, we had to have radical change in how we governed resources or depopulate. It was a mathematical result.

A year later, in 1999, a very capable investment and portfolio strategist asked me if he could come have a private lunch with me in Washington. We sat in a posh restaurant across from the Capitol. He said quietly that he had calculated out where the derivatives and debt bubble combined with globalization were going. The only logical conclusion he could reach was that significant depopulation was going to occur. He said his estimates led to an approximate population of 500 million. I said very quietly, “that’s my estimate too.” I will never forget the look of sadness that crossed his face.  I was amazed to find someone else who understood.

 MOVIES IN THE PARK

Looking for some family friendly FREE entertainment?  The Fargo Park District offers FREE movies in Island Park.  I attended this past Monday, with some friends, where they were showing “Madagascar 2: Escape From Africa.”  I am not sure when they will be doing it again, but check the Fargo Park District’s website.  Sounds like the next one will be mid August.  They have free pop, and popcorn, and yes, they do have bug spray on hand.  All you have to bring is a lawn chair, or a blanket, and now that we are getting closer to fall, a sweatshirt wouldn’t hurt.

=======================================================

THIS WEEKEND

Two good causes to promote for this weekend.  Friday night, there is a benefit for Holly Bergo, who is currently waiting for a double lung transplant.  She is suffering from Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM)…a rare lung disorder.  It will be at the Holiday Inn, in Fargo, Friday Night, going from 6pm until 11pm.  There will be a cash bar, music from a live DJ, and a whole lot of fun.  Knowing what it is like to wait for a double lung transplant, and the joy of receiving one, I am so happy to support Holly in her fight.  VERY limited lung function is one of the worst things someone can go through, and I am really hoping and praying that she does get that call.  She got the call once, but unfortunately, there was a problem with the lungs, so they had to send her home.  Let’s just hope that the next one will be the real deal!!

Also, the Great Strides for Cystic Fibrosis walk will be going on at Rabinus Park in South west Fargo (4315 18th Avenue South).  Registration starts at 9am, with the walk starting at 10am.  I have known two people who have died from this disease, and I have been battling Cystic Fibrosis myself.  The more money that can be raised, the better chance we can treat this disease and help those with CF enjoy a longer life.  Back in the 1950’s, people with CF were lucky to make it to elementary school.  Now, it isn’t uncommon for CF people to be living into their 30’s and 40’s.  I, myself, am 38, and after a double lung transplant, back in 2002, my quality of life is outstanding!  So, you can see why I am in BIG support of these two events.  Please come out and support one, or better still, both of these events.

 Celebs vs. Normal People

Well the Michael Jackson thing has seemed to die down a bit, and I know that around the KFGO building, people were wondering why were people making such a huge deal, especially after all of the things he was suspected of doing in his private life?  Well, here is my opinion at why.  There are certain people who effect each one of our lives in some way.  Let’s face it, most of our goal setting, in our lives comes from influence about what other people did, or taught us, and the success that they have achieved in life.  I look back on some of the songs that Michael Jackson has put out during his career.  Songs such as “Man In The Mirror,” and “Black Or White.”  If you Google the lyrics to those songs, you can see a great message.  There are people that take a lot of the messages in some of those songs (also lines to movies, and examples from people of influence) to heart, and try and pattern their lives after it.

In my own life, I know that I have been known to do that as well.  You look at the movie “Braveheart,” there are certain lines in that movie that are positive, and have an effect on my life.  Lines like, “You’re heart is free, have the courage to follow it.” And “Every man dies, but not every man really lives.”  Those are some powerful lines, that have an effect on my life.

As far as people go, a big influence in my life is a pro wrestler.  Yes I know it is fake, but seeing, and hearing about some of the off script challenges that he has faced in his career, made an effect on me, as far as work ethic, and never giving up on something that you really want.

While I know that there are some people that take celebrities more seriously than I do, but I do have an understanding on how some people can take the death of someone famous as someone who they felt close to.

Well, it is off to do the Mike McFeely Show!  Listen in weekdays from 2pm until 5pm on The Mighty 790, KFGO!

Everything has caffeine

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I went into that gas station on south University. The one that used be a Conoco, next to Embers…or Denny’s. The one that is right off the interstate. I think it is a Clark station now. Anyway, that’s not the important part of this blog.

This is becoming more and more true in every gas station you go into these days. After pumping a little gas on my way to the lake, i decided to get something to drink.

When did everything become a rush drink? Everything has caffeine, taurine or ginseng. Even the coffee was advertised to have extra caffeine. I think the water even has caffeine in it now.

I really felt old that day. Like a whole world of soft drink, energy drinks, juices and waters had flew right by me because I was apparently cryogenically frozen while the beverage industry became jolt-i-fied.

The Other Side of Business

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

“The only real valuable thing is intuition.”
-    Albert Einstein

As of late, the economic climate appears to be in a state of constant flux. Business owners are now scrambling to find the edge in a market challenged by the tightening grip of America’s proverbial pocketbook. What started as a slight change in the flow of commerce in certain arenas, seems now to have spread like wildfire in the collective consciousness of the entire country. Some businesses refuse to subscribe to the notion of a struggling economy. They hold their heads high above it all, and maintain the necessary focus that keeps their profits soaring. You may find yourself in the camp of this particular troupe of business owners. However, if you have found yourself succumbing to the consciousness known as lack in our economy, it can tend to feel like you are now putting out your S.O.S. as you start to feel a little lost on your own island, searching for help.

So what’s the difference between those who are soaring and their counterparts (perhaps including you) who are finding it nearly impossible to stay afloat? They are more than likely finding non-traditional methods of maintaining their profit margins and thensome. They are implementing tools such as the popular Law of Attraction, which states that you create everything around you based on your thoughts. Your thoughts create your world, so it is vital that you place thoughts on what it is you desire verses what you do not. However, how do you know where to put your thoughts if you feel yourself so stuck in a rut that the solutions are now more out of reach than ever? What if I told you that you were the only one to come to your own rescue? It is time for you to heed the S.O.S. call and seek refuge with no one other than yourself.

There is a wealth of insight, knowledge and wisdom inside each of us. When looking for the answers, businesses who have long outsourced assistance from “professionals” who claim to enter in and solve the problems like a chimney sweep are now resorting to good old fashioned intuition. In the information age, we have grown less dependant on ourselves for the answers. As business owners, we say things like “I’m not a marketing consultant” or “I don’t have an MBA, so how could I possibly know what the right thing is to do?”

The beautiful part of you is what you cannot get in school and that’s a built-in, already downloaded set of instincts and hunches that you are hard wired to access. No one else has the same “software” as you do. You are unique. Obviously you have listened in the past or you would not be where you are today nor would you be reading this article. However, continuing to keep the door open to that inner guidance is much like exercise…it takes devoted time and practice of flexing those intuitive muscles to maintain the consistent flow of it.

Every time you ignore that inner voice you make more work for yourself in the long run. Who cares what everyone else is doing? Continuing to ignore that divine wisdom over time adds up, and suddenly you feel as if you have been living someone else’s life, running someone else’s business. Here are some clues that tell you its time to stop and listen to your intuition.
1.    The hamster on the wheel is turning in your mind about a problem or decision and won’t stop.
2.    You hear yourself saying “If only someone could tell me what to do.”
3.    You ask others for their advice and the hamster gets back on the wheel, leaving you more confused then when you began.
4.    You find yourself ignoring phone calls and emails avoiding connection with others.

Stopping and becoming aware of the times you are running the hamster will have you being in action in a whole new light. Go in your office, close the door, be quiet and listen to your body’s signals that something is slightly off. Here are a few strong indications your intuition is kicking in.
1.    You notice things that seem like “coincidence” but that come along just at the right time. Stop to acknowledge it, it’s real.
2.    You feel motivated to do something by an invisible force you cannot explain.
3.    You feel a YUM or a YUK when you think about doing something. Go for the YUM as much as possible. You won’t regret it.

Business intuition should never replace things such as necessary market research or an adequate understanding of your field. However, if you are successful you already know there is more to it than that anyway. Television celebrity Oprah Winfrey once said, “follow your instincts. That is where true wisdom manifests itself.” Successful entrepreneur Bill Gates said, “often you have to rely on intuition.” American Spiritual Writer Eileen Caddy said, “cease trying to work everything out with your minds. It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let your whole life be Revelation.”

The next time you feel you are in an S.O.S. situation regarding a business decision, take out a quarter. Heads represents solution A. Tails represents solution B. Give the quarter a toss. When it lands, see what side lands face up. Then check in with your intuition. Does the solution feel YUMMY or YUCKY? Be your best guide. If neither A nor B feels good inside (regardless of what anyone says), it may be a good clue that it’s time to go back to the drawing board for more solutions. Trust yourself. Give yourself and your business the edge it deserves. What are you waiting for? There is no one who can rescue you better than you.
