Business: Author, Wordsmith, Marketing

On success, “It would be nice to publish at least one book with some notoriety, but if I don’t, my success in writing is knowing I have enough friends who enjoy my books.”

Fortunately for his readers, Del Dvoracek’s passion for writing novels over rides his frustration with the publishing business.  He said that unless an author strikes it big, the business end of getting a book out is cut throat because it is nearly impossible to get a large publisher to read your book, deals must be made, various entities demand a financial cut, and then stores need a financial incentive to stock and sell a book.

Even though Dvoracek continues to navigate “print on demand” companies and small publishers to get his works printed, writing is a personal passion more than anything and one quickly understands that he would continue writing regardless of publishing success. Over the last 30 years, Dvoracek’s passion has propelled him to author a dozen books, and numerous plays and screen plays.

Writing from travel experiences and research, Dvoracek writes historical fiction and adventure novels under his given name and uses the pen name of Kent Kamron for his western novels. When asked how he goes about writing a book Dvoracek said that he takes an historical fact and embellishes the rest to create a story.

Starting with a premise for his story, Dvoracek takes it from there by adding historical facts and fictional pizzazz.  As he said,” One thing leads to another.” Dvoracek also draws background information from his personal library which is full of western non fiction books that cover wars, soldiers, gun fighters and the lives of Native Americans.  For his adventure novels, he pulls from his time in military service when he served as a Russian linguist and flew air force reconnaissance missions.

Dvoracek’s writing process takes many different routes as Del does not follow a set writing schedule and writes only when he feels like it. He is also busy with another full professional life owning and operating Del Agency & Associates, an advertising firm in Fargo.  He said that he can write just about anywhere at any time—in his office at Del Agency or at home. However, he said that he leaves his writing behind when he vacations or is at his lake cabin.

Dvoracek said that he is inspired by the authors Robert Ludlum and Michael Crichton. Just like these best selling authors, Dvoracek said that he would like to get a book to really snap and go some place.  Until then, he stressed that the thrill is writing and sharing his work with friends.
